Beach access mats, beach wheelchairs, paved nature trails and step-free planning tips for visitors using wheelchairs or with limited mobility on Anna Maria Island.

Anna Maria Island is flat and relaxed, and with a little planning it's a wonderful place for visitors who use a wheelchair or find walking on sand difficult. Here's where to start.

1. Manatee Public Beach, Holmes Beach. Manatee County added accessibility mats in 2023 to make a firm path onto the sand. A beach wheelchair is available to rent or borrow here, so ask at the beach about availability.

2. Coquina Beach, Bradenton Beach. Free beach wheelchairs are available at the concession stand, first come, first served; bring photo ID. There's also a pavilion and parking close to the sand.

3. Robinson Preserve, just over the bridge in Bradenton. Paved paths wind through restored coastal wetland, with water views and plenty of birdlife. Admission is free. More details.

4. Plan your parking first. Our parking guide lists the island's public lots, with directions and rules. Parking guide.

5. Riding the free trolley. All Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) buses and trolleys have wheelchair lifts, including the free Route 5 island trolley. For questions about scooters or boarding, call MCAT on (941) 747-8621.

6. Boat and dolphin tours. Many small boats can help with boarding, but every boat is different. Call the operator first and explain what you need.

7. An indoor option. The Anna Maria Island Historical Museum is a good, shady outing. Contact the museum about access before you visit.

Good to know: accessibility equipment and arrangements can change. Always confirm with Manatee County or the venue before you set off.
